Book Reviews :: Let us C by Yashavant Kanetkar
Lot of people are contacting me for more information on the book. I don't have much information. However I request you to use this forum to share any information you have.
Note: Many readers have pointed out that some things I claim here are wrong (including the portability issue). Note that this article was written way back in 1999-2000, it may be absolutely irrelevent to later editions of the book. I haven't kept myself updated with the later editions, so please do not rely on this review.. Also note If any of the readers have a review of the later versions, please get in touch with me, I'll upload your reviews here.
The obsolete review follows:
I feel the worthy title for this book would be Let us TC rather than Let us C . This book assumes that you are using Turbo C / Turbo C++ compiler from Borland international . Most of the code in the book is temptingly cool but mostly non-portable .
If you wanna dive directly into programming professional packages using C then this is the book for
you. This book arms you with knowledge on various things like mouse programming , graphics
programming etc. but all this is specific to Turbo C compiler . So dont complain if you end up with
grossly non-portable C code after reading this book.
Also you might feel like you are programming in some alien language if you switch to C programming in Linux/Unix etc. if you have studied from this book.
Having dedicated servers makes sure that the hosting remains kink free. This is the job of a webmaster to make sure that there is adequate backup too. [Sponsored]

20. Dear Rajeshji -wr.to GNU/Linux ,gcc and this book:
Sirji ,
I just bought "Let Us C" and "Let Us C Solutions" by Yashawantha Kanetkar
from cochin on 31st January of latest edition-that is 8th edition.
I am on GNU/Linux for past 6-7 years fully.I can say ,the codes shown in the latest edition
is fully portable and is not considered with borland's old compilers.
on gcc-4.3 ,it shows warning(regarding standards-iso/ansi I guess) with kanetkar's try of
starting C programs by
:

printf("Hello World\n"

}

^without any return value.

while today below is the version which should not give warnings with "gcc -Wall -ansi -o
foobar ~/foobar.c " compilation(gcc-4.3)
